We are now engaged in researching and implementing Social Environment Design. As a part of this process, we are engaging with others to get them involved as well. We feel that SED is by far the best available approach to avoid ASI’s downsides (power lock-in, potential existential catastrophe) and harness its upsides (radically advancing collective flourishing) given the technological, social and environmental landscapes we find ourselves in, but, however noble the goal and however tractable the approach, nothing will change in the world without action being taken.

To this end, we have implemented a system that will motivate individuals and organizations to contribute to the creation of SED and the supporting technologies that will allow its integration into a pluralistic society. This structure can be thought of as SED v0, the first implementation of an organization that follows the Social Environment Design process, albeit imperfectly due to limitations of current technology and scale.
We hope that you will engage with this process as well, and we have numerous ways that individuals can help, all of which are logged through a Contribution Tracking Framework for future reward. This reward will be issued through SED itself or any similar system that emerges based upon natural language Societal Reward System Guidelines which are agreed and voted on by the group before implementation by the AI principal.
Both the tracking framework and reward guidelines will evolve as the capacities of SED grow. The tracking system will become more capable through human research and development and AI inputs over time, and the reward system more effective and fair through the AI recommendation and human voting/value elicitation cycle inherent to SED. Contributions made early in the development process are more valuable along several axes, providing additional motivation to participants debating whether to get involved at an early stage.

In recognition of our core value of equality, SED does not differentiate between participants based on relative power, past contribution or along any other axis. All participants have an equal opportunity to participate and infuse their values into the system. For operational reasons, we have a standard management structure within Humanity Unleashed Inc. (the corporate entity), but the explicit goal is to release SED to public ownership as soon as is feasible, allowing “Humanity Unleashed” to become a fully decentralized movement and platform, and we have made numerous implementation decisions to ensure that the organization itself is not able to subvert this process.
We are structured as a nonprofit to prevent incentive misalignment
All work done within the organization follows the contribution tracking framework - supporting information is stored in an auditable and tamper-proof database
Significant technical advances are codified as academic papers submitted to top AI conferences.
We have a policy of radical inclusion. Anyone who would like to contribute is welcome to. We cannot provide active guidance to all parties, but we maintain a board of needed work and track all contributions that follow our process to be rewarded by the system we are collaborating toward.
Once SED is proven to be adequately robust, the framework will be decentralized, allowing decisions and advancements to take place without the need for a standard corporate governance. At that point, everyone participating will be at the same level and no party will hold outsized sway over the system.
The goal of this is to create a structure that does not require individual trust before feeding into positive work in the world. We should never have to worry that we are going to be taken advantage of when working to help others.
We truly believe that SED, or something very similar to it, is the only functional path forward to secure the future of the vast majority of humanity and life on planet earth generally. It also has the benefit of being the most moral course of action given basic assumptions about the empathic, other-considering nature of human moral functioning. We hope you agree and encourage you to review our roadmap and, if you’re so inclined, to participate!
