Humun breaks global needs down into 14 primary categories, seven social and seven environmental, with synergistic effects between them. A curated list of existing organizations with effective approaches to addressing these needs are shown below. Social Issues
Water - The Water Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization unlocking human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation.
Environmental Issues
Pollution Prevention - The Natural Resource Defense Council's "Clean by Design" program is an innovative approach using the buying power of multinational corporations as a lever to reduce the environmental impacts of their suppliers abroad. Clean by Design focuses on improving process efficiency to reduce waste and emissions and improve the environment.
Nutrition - Project Healthy Children works closely with governments, private industries, and partner agencies to support the design and implementation of food fortification programs to improve the health of children, women, and men around the world every time they eat a meal.
Land Quality - The Center for Creative Land Recycling works to enable communities to develop sustainably and equitably by restoring underutilized properties to productive use in a process known as Land recycling, preserving existing, high-quality green space and providing a host of other benefits.
Shelter - The National Alliance to End Homelessness works toward ending homelessness in America by improving homelessness policy, building on-the-ground capacity, and educating opinion leaders.
Habitat Preservation - The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.
Physical Safety - Equality Now works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world. Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organizations and individual activists since 1992, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support efforts to stop these abuses.
Biodiversity Maintenance - Conservation Strategy Fund sustains natural ecosystems and human communities through strategies powered by conservation economics. Their trainings, analysis, and timely expertise make development smarter, quantify the benefits of nature, and create enduring incentives for conservation worldwide.
Social Support - Living Goods supports networks of ‘Avon-like’ health entrepreneurs who go door to door to teach families how to improve their health and wealth and sell life-changing products such as simple treatments for malaria and diarrhea, safe delivery kits, fortified foods, clean cook stoves, water filters, and solar lights.
Climate Forcing - Carbonfund.org is a leader in the fight against global warming, making it easy and affordable for any individual, business or organization to reduce & offset their climate impact and hasten the transition to a clean energy future. Carbonfund.org achieves its goals primarily through climate change education, carbon offsets and reduction, and public outreach.
Social Opportunity - GiveDirectly provides unconditional cash transfers using cell phone technology to some of the poorest people in Kenya and Uganda. These direct cash transfers allow families to buy much-needed food and shelter, educate their children, and start small businesses.
Resource Management - Earth Island Institute is a non-profit, public interest, membership organization that supports people who are creating solutions to protect our shared planet.
Education - Development Media International (DMI) runs radio and TV campaigns to change behaviors and save lives in developing countries. DMI uses scientific modelling to save the greatest number of lives in the most cost-effective way.
Research - Innovations for Party Action works to discover and promote effective solutions to global poverty problems by creating high quality evidence of impacts and helping turn that evidence into better programs that help the poor and improve their environment.
